Wild Berries of the Woods

Posted on August 5, 2021February 6, 2025

Berries are the colourful fruits of the forest that provide nutrients and food for many diverse animal species. Bears depend on berries like blackberries, huckleberries, and thimbleberries for survival before winter; birds use berries for feeding their young; even insects like wasps and ants use berries for food. These fruits of the forest are spread and planted by sprouting from animal feces (if you’ve ever seen bear scat, you’ll know what I mean). My photos honour these versatile and important food sources, poisonous or non.
