Mycelium is the root-like structure of a mushroom, attaching to the fungi’s base and running like veins through the ground or wood it’s growing from. These fungal veins can run through miles of earth, creating lines of communication to the surrounding roots and ecosystems underground.
You can think of these “roots” as the entity of the fungus, and the actual fruiting body, the parts we see and label as mushrooms, as only the tip of the iceberg. It’s quite amazing to stand in a forest and know that under your feet are webs and webs of thin, white strands stretching over and under and in between, larger than we could possibly perceive.
