Charcoal, Clouds, & Chickadees: Adventures in Art Class

Since September of last year, I’ve been involved in a weekly art class that has most definitely changed my life.

I went into the class with a curiosity about drawing; I’ve always enjoyed sketching and doodling since I was little. Most of my artistic projects involved making cards for birthdays, attempting to capture the candidness of my cats, and copying my mom’s much more sophisticated style.

My mild interest turned into a fascinated passion. I began to see the world through different eyes – paying attention to light, texture, shadow, shape. I found drawing to be challenging, satisfying, grueling, rewarding, and ultimately enjoyable. Eyes and animals are probably my favourite subjects so far, though it’s been fun to try landscapes, still life, and plants. We’ve also been experimenting with using different mediums such as charcoal, graphite sticks, and the usual drawing pencils ranging from 4H to 6B.
