While visiting the historic town of Barkerville, we were accompanied by the watchful and beady eyes of Columbian ground squirrels. Their careful observations were mostly from a distance, beside their burrows that they strategically slipped into when a passerby was deemed to be too close.
However, not all of the ground squirrels were as fickle and skittish, and one in particular let me come quite close to it. I would take a few shots, then venture closer, much as I did with the ruffed grouse that I photographed a while ago. I happened to have my telephoto lens on my camera, and combined with this peculiar rodent and its candidness (I swear it was even posing for me), I was able to get quite a few detailed and dramatic photos.
