My Drawing Process

Ever since I took a teen drawing class a little over a year ago, I’ve found myself being drawn more and more towards art. (Hehe… pun slightly intended.)

I personally love drawing, especially with white and black charcoal to give my pieces extra contrast and drama. I’ve also dabbled in painting with acrylic and watercolour, and I find a lot of joy in that too – but drawing is ultimately the least stressful of the mediums for me. I can always erase what I’ve messed up and start again. Something about the soothing and limited tones pencils offer is also intriguing, since I have to make the piece interesting through detail, shape, and contrast rather than colour. I used to have a lighter, gentler hand when drawing, but I realized that to bring a drawing to life and really make it pop, I needed to add more darks and lights to my subjects. It seemed overly dramatic at first, but it’s what makes art all the more realistic.

I recently drew a portrait of one of my cats, and I documented the process of the very beginning to the end result. I started out with an HB pencil for the initial sketch, then went over it with a black charcoal pencil. I used charcoal for the background as well. The eyes were a mixture of grey, green, and yellow pencil crayons, and I added highlights with white charcoal and white paint. Altogether it’s a multimedia piece that was a lot of fun to create.
