I recently took a nine-week-long art class with the same teacher that cultivated my skill and love for drawing over a ten-month-long course two years ago. (The post on this course can be found here.) This particular class encouraged me to try some new techniques and draw subjects that I don’t normally focus on.
The first piece shows a vase with a lemon, and is very texturally appealing. I tried to capture the nuanced lighting and delicate surfaces as best as I could.
The second piece is much more playful – these bubbles were challenging and yet fun to draw, and I’m happy with how they turned out. I particularly like the depth of the drawing that is caused by the varying tones of white.
The last two drawings are side portraits. The first we drew from another art piece (as with the lemon and vase sketch), and the latter I drew from a photograph of my younger self. I’m hoping to work a bit more on this drawing as there’s still some things to touch up.

And a bonus: some small sketches and doodles I’ve done recently! I’ve been trying to teach myself to draw not for perfection but rather enjoyment and observation. It’s been difficult to learn as I know I’m quite the perfectionist in some ways. However, focusing more on messy/silly/experimental/imperfect art feels both freeing and exciting. It certainly allows me to be more creative and less inhibited.

Those side portraits are amazing! And yes, drawing just the joy of it is also a good reminder, I agree.
